Topographic Normalization of Landsat Thematic Mapper Data in Three Mountain Environments
نویسنده
چکیده
A comparative analysis is presented for empirical topographic normalization of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data in varied forest and topographic settings. The paired study included rugged areas of Glacier National Park, Montana, Linville Gorge Wilderness, North Carolina, and Green Mountains, Vermont, U.S.A. Empirical models of topographic bias achieved significant corrections in the Montana and Vermont sites. Relative homogeneity of forest structure offset rugged topography in Montana to yield the highest success of normalization. Significant models could not be derived for Linville Gorge. Topographic normalization is most successful when canopy complexity and altitudinal zonation are low to moderate. Atmospheric pollution and geologic control in ridge-valley alignment are important considerations when undertaking topographic normalization in mountain environments.

Topographic Normalization in Rugged Terrain
Remote sensing of rugged terrain is hampered by topographic effects on spectral signatures. The purpose of this study was to attempt normalization of the topographic effect encountered when analyzing Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery in the Rocky Mountains. Two normalization techniques were performed on a subscene of a TM image of Rocky Mountain National Park. The first technique was a band ...
متن کاملImproved Topographic Normalization for Landsat TM Images by Introducing the MODIS Surface BRDF
In rugged terrain, the accuracy of surface reflectance estimations is compromised by atmospheric and topographic effects. We propose a new method to simultaneously eliminate atmospheric and terrain effects in Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images based on a 30 m digital elevation model (DEM) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) atmospheric products. Moreover, we define a norm...
متن کاملLand Cover Classification Using Landsat TM Imagery in the Tropical Highlands: The Influence of Anisotropic Reflectance
Despite the tremendous attention given to conservation projects in the Neotropics, few published studies have documented remote sensing studies in tropical highland areas. Even fewer publications have addressed the use of topographic normalization methods in these regions. This article discusses the influence of anisotropic reflectance patterns on land cover classification for two study areas c...
متن کاملSpectral Signature of Alpine Snow Cover from the Landsat Thematic Mapper
M a p p i n g of snow and estimation of snow characteristics from satellite remote sensing data require that we distinguish snow from other surface cover and from clouds and compensate for the effects of the atmosphere and rugged terrain. The spectral signature of the snowpack is calculated from a radiative transfer model accounting for scattering and absorption by the ice grains, water inclusi...
متن کاملTechnical Note Use of ordinal conversion for radiometric normalization and change detection
Change detection studies in remote sensing operate with the notion that a quantifiable difference in an object’s spectral value, from one time period to another, represents a physical change on the ground. To confound this premise, other factors, such as atmospheric conditions and illumination geometry, can influence an object’s spectral response. For this reason, a common first step in digital...
